Istria Granfondo
THE ISTRIAN GREEN HILLS ON A BIKE

It will be a weekend of cycling in Istria the next 10 and 11 October, a few kilometers from the border of Trieste.

Early autumn days in Istria are ideal for those who love cycling, thanks to the favorable climate and a fascinating landscape, with green hills that become tinged with autumn colors.

The events start on Saturday, October 10th with the Istria Granfondo Family & Gourmet Tour, a 25 km long easy route in Cittanova and surroundings, starting from the sea and riding through olive groves and vineyards. At the end of the ride will be offered Istrian dishes, as well as in the rest stops along the way. The event is designed for the younger cyclists and their families, who slowly and saftely will ride on easy routes closed to traffic and "cyclists-friendly".

Sunday, October 11th will be dedicated to the sportive cyclists, who will participate at the fourth edition of the Istria Granfondo. The race is thought for those who enjoy cycling inspired by professionals’ performances, as the Croatian national champion Vladimir Miholjevic - who, until a few years ago, was in several Italian professional teams - witness and consultant of the event.

The start and finish will be in Umago, at the sports center and tennis stadium, inside the tourist complex of Stella Maris.

There will be two paths: the Istria Granfondo Small (89 km long) and the Istria Granfondo Classic (132 km long), through which transited most of the 14th stage of the Giro d’Italia in 2004.

The route crosses the hinterland of the Istrian peninsula passing through Oprtalj, Motovun and Pazin and then back to Umago. There will be 6 rest stops along the way.
Compared to past editions the route has changed to provide new views of the territory.

This Granfondo, which last year was attended by about a thousand cyclists from 10 countries, will give 100 prizes to the best cyclists and 20 prizes to the most numerous teams. The organization is composed of over 300 people, including 150 volunteers and members of the many Croats cycling clubs.

For the "non-riders" chaperons there will be entertainments on Sunday morning: bicycle acrobat evolutions, paths with artificial difficulties for children and much more. Finally, a "pasta party" for everybody offered by the organization.
