The bicycle’s market is booming!
GO PEDAL, ITALY!

The crisis has produced some positive effects, in fact it has brought a stronger environmental and healthy sensibility.

The bicycles sold in Italy in 2014 were 1.644.592, that means +6,6% comparing to 2013 (1.542.758 units sold).

The paradox is that the use of the two-wheel vehicle has been encouraged by another world problem: the greenhouse effect. The climate is warmer, so it’s possible to use the bicycle more often. Not only in Italy, this tendency is confirmed in the principal countries of the Old Continent too.

The data are provided by Confindustia ANCMA (National Association of Cycle Motorcycle and Accessories) and the University of Politecnico, Milan. According to those data, the production is slightly increasing, 2.728.600 bicycles (+2,1%) and the export is always the strongest way with 1.765.819 items (+1,1%). Italy is confirmed as major producer in Europe.

The data also highlights that the 2011 anti-dumping duties (the fight against the prices that are lower than the normal value) are having the hoped effects and they are rewarding the local industrial investments compared with the Asian production.

The eBike market (the bicycle with pedal assistance) is confirmed as an emerging one, despite a little decrease (51.156 units in 2014, 51.405 in 2013): in the European countries more than a million units have been sold. The internal production is growing by approximately 40%, as an answer to the need of keeping more under control the products’ quality. Even if the average price of those vehicles is increasing, also the foreign market is asking for a higher quality bike.

Overall, the trade balance of the bike and its parts for 2014 was in excess of 142 million euro.As always the protagonist sector is the seat, as well as the components connected to frames, transmissions, wheels and handlebars for racing bikes.

The best sellers are the trekking or city bikes (32%), followed by the mountain bikes (31%), kids’ bikes (18%), race’s products (6%), classical bikes (9%), electric bikes (4%).

Folding bicycles are increasing too, even if they are still niche numbers (45.000 items each year). Many Companies are reinforcing their range also with folding bicycles with pedal assistance. The luxury market-segment is resisting and it confirms its last year numbers.

The geographical analysis puts the North-East first regarding sales, even if the population is inferior in terms of numbers comparing to other areas. Standing ovation for Veneto and Emilia Romagna that host structures and infrastructures dedicated to bicycles that are able to support the purchase and the use of the bike.

Where there is integration between fast public transports, cycling lanes, controlled traffic zones and parking spots, the bike results as the most practical, convenient and quick vehicle: 50% of the movements inside a city center are inferior to 5 kilometers and in those cases the bike results to be the fastest and most appropriated vehicle.
