Livigno, paradise of sports
SNOW AND...COLD

Little Tibet” has always been the nickname of Livigno, the beautiful place at the edge of Valtellina close to the Swiss. In fact, it’s very similar to the Himalayan region because it’s isolated by the mountains and the temperature is really low, perfect for all winter sports thanks to the plentiful snow during the coldest months of the year. Also the architecture is in harmony, with several mountain huts and different buildings all made with wood.

All these features made Livigno like a paradise for all ski sports; in particular during the last years the freeride (ski and snowboard) became really popular, bringing on these mountains enthusiasts from all over the world. To guarantee the most safety has been created a daily information service on the stability of the local snow cover, in addiction with the regional avalanche bulletin of ARPA di Bormio and Swiss SLF.

This is an innovation that allows all freeriders, but also traditional skiers, to be well-informed every morning about local conditions through the news that are promulgated by the website of Apt Livigno (www.livigno.eu), also exposed near the ski lift stations and sent through a newsletter service to all operators (www.livigno.eu/landing-freeriders).

SNOW AND...COLD
SLIDING DOWN THE SLOPES

In Livigno you can find the enthusiasts of Telemark Skiing, which has Norwegian origins. The characteristic of this sport is that only the toe of the ski boot is fixed to the ski, thereby creating this ski very similar to a ballet: from the 21st to the 28th of March, with the “Skieda”, all the town will transform in the ideal scenery for the Telemarkers coming from all over the world.

Another breathtaking event is the “Suzuki Nine Nights”: from the 5th to the 10th of April several high-level snowboarder (in addition to some Olympic champions) will spectacle with extreme evolutions on the Castle of Livigno, the artificial structure made with ice and snow that has been built to make fly all snowboarders.

But in Livigno there are not just shows; here you can find a lot of quiet cross-country skiing paths that are open from November to April, and often it can happen to meet some Champions of this discipline who take advantage of the good snow conditions do some healthy exercise (www.livigno.eu/sci-nordico).

Or if you like, there’s also the opportunity to choose paths for snowshoes with unique itineraries surrounded by nature and its silence. All paths are accessible to everyone and they don’t need any specific practice (www.livigno.eu/ciaspole).

ON THE SNOW... WITH A FAT BIKE

Since this winter, in Livigno are available also the Fat Bikes, curious mountain bikes provided with extra large tires (three-four times bigger than a traditional one), that allow you to easy pedal on the snow. There are trails in the forests of Valandrea and Val Federia which are dedicated to this kind of sport, but you can ride the Fat Bike also on a winter ski slope 20 km long.

With these bikes you can also get in the ski lift of Valandrea, to enjoy an exciting descent. In addition, there are several rental shops and guides to make excursions of every level of difficulty, also during the night, with typical dinner in a mountain hut (www.livigno.eu/fat-bike).

An example? The Hotel Spol Alpine Wellness SPA - in cooperation with The Bike Store - offers unique excursions riding a Fat Bike along ski slopes and paths that bring to the fabulous “malga Vago” or a trail full of adrenaline along the Val Federia.

And for the most intrepid people, there’s the opportunity to try descents of different levels using the available ski lifts (http://www.hotelspol.it/).

Horse-riding is one of the most usable activities for those who want to spend an holiday in contact with the nature. You can start your excursion from the riding stables and then reach the forests of Larches that surround the town. During the summer time you can reach also the highest “malghe” (farm hut).

In addition, Livigno is a really big duty-free area, in which all shops of the town (perfumeries, hi-tech, jewelries, clothes boutiques and sports shops) offer every kind of goods at a very low price. But not only for shopping: the gasoline price is so low that the trip becomes very cheap.
