San Candido, snow and relax
ON THE ALTA PUSTERIA'S SNOW

Alta Pusteria is a really lovely corner of Trentino Alto Adige both in winter and summer, the village of San Candido is certainly its 'pearl'. Set between the Sesto Dolomites and the Natural Park of Lavaredo’s Three Peaks, it offers many opportunities to enjoy the mountains in an enchanting landscape. During the winter season, thanks to the slope that overlooks the town, you can ski, snowboard, but also take walks in the snow and snowshoeing, admiring nature in the silence of the woods.

One of the great trips that you can do in this area is in Val Campo di Dentro that connects Sesto to San Candido. You can leave your car at the parking lot at the beginning of the valley and follow a path that leads to the “Tre Scarpieri” mountain  refuge. It is an easy hike that allows you to admire enchanting sceneries, silent places where you can walk on the fresh and still immaculate snow, immersed in absolute peace. It is possible to organize a snowshoeing tour with a local mountain guide, which offers the opportunity to know the area and learn to distinguish the footprints of the animals that inhabit these mountains, like hares and chamois.

Another interesting excursion in San Candido is a walk up to Bagni di San Candido, where there is a water spring, called "Kaiserwasser" because the emperor Franz Joseph used to drink it when he was visiting this area. You can see striking views of the Dolomites along the path that from Bagni leads to the refuge Baranci, which is right on the slopes. Here you can refresh tasting speck, one of the DOC products of this area, or trying some other typical products.

RELAX IN SAN CANDIDO

The Baranci ski district is right at the foot of the town and it is part of the Sesto Dolomites district, which offers over 90 km of slopes accessible with a single skipass, the Dolomiti Superski. Alta Pusteria is also known as one of the main destinations for cross-country skiing with 200 km of slopes.

It’s also possible to use the "Holidaypass" that allows you to travel without any limit on the ski bus of the entire Pusteria Valley and other transports in South Tyrol, to move from a district to another.

The lovely center of San Candido deserves a visit too, crossed by a pedestrian street that leads to the baroque parish church. Immediately behind it, there is a small masterpiece of architecture: the collegiate church of San Candido, the most important Romanesque building in South Tyrol. Continuing the walk through the inner streets of the village, you can admire the old houses and enjoy picturesque views of the river Drava.

Mountain rhymes with well-being and to enjoy a little relax the best option is to go for a few hours to the Spa, to restore after skiing and snowshoeing. I have tried the small but refined Spa at the SportHotel Tyrol & Wellness of the Wurmböck’s family, which also offers comfortable rooms and a restaurant that serves local specialties such as game or the Tyrolean rosticciata.
