Planet Earth’s Week
DISCOVERING THE ITALIAN NATURAL BEAUTIES

Raise your hand if you knew it. The Roman countryside houses the remains of a big elephant and a group of prehistoric men, found on the riverbed of a river that flowed 320 thousand years ago. You just need to go to Polledrara of Cecanibbio, the paleontological museum that preserves a wealth of fossil deposits of Roman Pleistocene, one of the richest in Europe. A treasure that is a joy for modern Indiana Jones and soon it will return to glory thanks to the "Planet Earth’s Week", with guided tours open to all.

From October 18th to 25th the unique Italian event dedicated to the discovery (also by bike or on foot) of Geo-sciences’ jewels will be back. For the third edition, secret and magical places of our country’s natural beauty will be open.

An event that every year marks a boom of participants and initiatives, in this edition with sensational numbers: 237 appointments at the same time, 180 locations, more than 600 researchers and the entire Geo-sciences world from Universities, research centers and never witnessed archaeological sites.

A great project, designed by geologists Rodolfo Coccioni from the University of Urbino and Silvio Seno from the University of Pavia. They explain: "Italian people finally will have the chance to visit and admire sites of great importance, museums, places before closed or unknown, underground paths to admire the Italian underground”.

Excursions, walks in urban and historical centers, visits to museums and research centers, tours, exhibitions, educational and experimental workshops for children, shows, food-tastings and conferences will be organized in the cities.

The main goal is to encourage people to discover and value the natural Italian heritage, approaching young people to science and ‘infect’ them with enthusiasm for the research. In addition, respect for the environment, care for the land and for the geological culture, with a special attention also to cultural tourism, sensitive to environmental values, such as those traveling on foot or on bike pedals.

All events are reported in the "Geoeventi" section on the official website: an interactive map shows places and events accurately.

So Italy becomes the star of a unique event. In this case, pioneer of a model to be exported.
