Salento, Negramaro, olive groves. These are the ingredients for the Lands of Arneo and Negramaro’s trekking, a three stages trek in the least known inland of Puglia, a journey to discover typical farms and olive trees.
Salento is best known for its coastline, white sandy beaches and crystal clear water. This hike will take you in the hinterland, through the wildest areas, meeting old farming families and getting lost in the countryside’s colors.
An ideal adventure for those who want to forget about the noise of the city or the frenzy that populate the coast during summertime, passing through the towns of Porto Cesareo, Veglie and San Pancrazio Salentino. Lovers of rural culture and traditions can visit the farms, which are useful to understand the old social and familiar organization. Many of the old 'farms' have been converted into accommodation, maintaining its historic character. As the farm Zanzara or the holiday farm TerreAmare, surrounded by olive groves. On the way you will come across many homes built in the 50s by the farmers who embezzled the lands that they cultivated. The so-called “Reformation’ Houses”.
The path also leads to Torre del Cardo, a building dating back to the 16th century, an ancient lookout point to identify pirates and Saracens. Continuing north you come across the majestic Monaci Castle, fortification of the 16th century, which now houses the Merum museum dedicated to wine and rural tradition. From here you can reach the wine cooperative of Salice Salentino, where you can taste typical wines of the area.
A trekking route that satisfies many passions, combining the pleasure of nature, the culinary aspect and the historical interest of a hinterland yet to be discovered.
