The Treno Natura (Nature Train) is a slow trip on a train in the green heart of Tuscany, among the noise of the steam locomotive, discovering all the beauty of Lands of Siena. This idea is so original that it conquered tourists but also the fifth edition of the “Go Slow” International Contest, launched from the Co.Mo.Do. (confederation of mild mobility) and the Go Slow Social Club cultural association.
But, what that? It is the prestigious award doomed to Public Administrations and Studies of Landscape architecture, who distinguish for their projects of mild mobility and for the development for the eco-sustainable outdoor tourism. The prize for the project will be held the 21st of November in Fermo.
The annual schedule has 15 routes, from March to December, on ancient railway-coaches towed by steam locomotives. The itinerary starts and ends in Siena, going through Val d’Orcia, Crete Senesi, Amiata and Valdichiana. Every route lasts one day and it’s matches with special events, festivals and feasts of flavors.
For the prize giving the train will stop in Fermo and it will shine in the “Progetti Realizzati” (realized projects) category.
Go on board of one of these railway-coaches means go back in time, admiring the beauty of landscapes and revive tastes and colours of the good food such as Brunello, red wines of Montalcino, the Cinta Senese, the Pecorino cheese of Tuscany, the Chianina beef, the olive oil, the Panforte and chestnuts.
The Treno Natura is a trip started 25 years ago: the first idea of tourist trains on the ancient line Siena-Asciano-Monte Antico-Buonconvento-Siena dates at 1990, with the “train+trekking” proposal.
After a break of some years, from 1996 the Treno Natura didn’t stop anymore, becoming more and more popular among tourists. It also launched the recovery of the disused line with vintage models, the enhancement of the industrial archeology and the discovery of Lands of Siena with the philosophy of “soft mobility”.
For a trip on a train which is also a jump into the past.
