The most beautiful and wild sights of Salento can be discovered at sunset and in the dark of the night.
For this reason the Trekking Group of Alezio, a small town in the province of Lecce, has created an overnight route in the ‘Porto Selvaggio and Palude del Capitano’ Park. It is a natural area in the town of Nardò, characterized by a rocky coastline, protected by pine woods and Mediterranean bush.
The tour starts before dinner from Alezio, a small town of ancient origins (the coat of arms of the city is still in Messapian-Greek letters), to go up to the Torre dell’Alto tower, a construction of the sixteenth century that overlooks the sea. From here, 50 meters above the sea, you can enjoy a unique sunset and photography lovers can certainly indulge themselves to capture an original Salento panorama.
Among breathtaking cliffs and uncontaminated beaches, the trekking continues to another coastal tower of Salento: the Uluzzo. In the shadow of the tower, a few meters from it, you go through the Horse Cave, an archaeological site that has revolutionized the Homo Sapiens studies. In fact in the cave were found the first traces of European Sapiens, dating back to 45,000 years ago. All around is a concert of sounds and smells; the scent of myrtle, rosemary and thyme mingle with the songs of the tub gurnard and the colorful hoopoe.
In Torre Uluzzo the sunset turns into twilight and the walk continues, going from bright colors in lengthening shadows. The path descends through the pine forest, to the bay of Porto Selvaggio guided by the dim light of the torches and the stars, surrounded by total silence.
The last stretch to finish the hiking loop path takes back to Torre dell’Alto, the old building wanted by the Spanish viceroy Don Pietro da Toledo to defend the coast of Puglia, and today it welcomes the nightlife hikers of the unknown Salento.
The next walks are scheduled on August 1st and 22nd. We recommend comfortable clothing, hiking shoes, mosquito repellent, flashlight, water and a snack.
